April started off in style. I went down to Maryland with the ECTRA president's horse, Spot, for a 25 mile CTR. We won.

CP was with me for another month. I started teaching him the basics of trail riding on the farm.

I took on a morning gig for a local endurance rider, feeding her three 100 miler mares at a farm just up the street from me. Unfortunately, the job was short-lived because the barn owner turned out to be a bit of a nut job and the endurance rider moved her horses on short notice. Thankfully, the rider took a liking to me and I made a great connection. There should be lots of riding in my near future and I got some nice photos of her horses... which she bought a ton of. Woo!

I also started working with a coming two year old American Warmblood named Romeo. I'll be breaking him to ride in the near future. In the process, I got to meet a one-eared pot-bellied pig who Herbie has become fast friends with.

I took CP for his first real trail ride off the farm. We did 5 miles on Baldpate Mountain. He was a rock star.

My friend Crysta from Nevada came out to NJ on a business trip. We spent two days together, taking a whirlwind tour of the area and seeing lots of horses. Somewhere in there, my tire went flat AGAIN. I wound up spending a ton of money having new tires with a warranty put on my car. Problem solved.

My days featured horses, horses, and more horses. Romeo learned to lunge in side reins, then ground drive. CP started work over ground poles. Ozzy gave a riding lesson to a four year old girl.

I went to Duncraven to watch the jumpers.

I trailer loaded a horse named Lucky on Friday the 13th.

That same day, I booked a photography client. Her new blog was going live at Sidelines Magazine and she needed a profile picture.

I got to go to Bluestone and take pictures of baby horses.

Mike and I went to Maryland to help my dad with his boat.

~EatsNoCheese started taking lessons with me. We're riding together like we always wanted to when we were kids.

I babysat a 10 year old beagle for four days for a friend.

My stupid horse tried to kill himself by jumping a four foot gate from a standstill.

My new client pony, JR, arrived. He will be with me for two months on full-training board. After that, I may take him on free lease if I can find someone who wants to ride him regularly. He's an awesome pony and does it all.

I also rode a 16.3hh OTTB who needs a fresh start in his training. I opened his owner's eyes to a lot of things that his current trainer has been doing wrong. She was very impressed and is coming back for a lesson this week. I'm hoping this horse will move in with me in the near future.

Erin came down to ride CP to see if he was ready for a second rider. He was mostly good, but he did throw one sneaky buck and unseated her. She got back on and ended on a good note. He's not ready for kids yet, but I think other riders are going to become part of his training routine.

I took sale photos of Mikey, the TB I rescued in 2010 for ~rckmeamadeus. He is on trial at his potential new home as we speak.

Ozzy turned 11.

Mike built me two sets of jump standards. I've started jumping the ponies. CP is showing a lot of talent and JR is as honest as honest can be.

I GOT TO PET A BABY SQUIRREL!!!

Yup. That's about it.
So March isn't technically over, but I'm going out of state tomorrow so I might as well write this now.

The month started off with me going with Erin to her first show with Jabby.

At the same time, I got a new project pony. CP was a two year old when I last saw him (he used to live with Ozzy). Now he's five and it turns out he has a nasty buck. His owner is boarding him with me while we get the issue resolved.

The first day I rode him, he managed to toss me, but I held onto the reins and got right back on board. The pony was shocked and appalled, but the change in his attitude was immediate.

The shenanigans continued for a while:

But eventually we started to make progress:

In the mean time I was busy racking up all sorts of trail miles. I rode at Baldpate on Ozzy with Jen and Sunraider. I rode in the Pine Barrens on a 29yo QH gelding named Jimmy, an appaloosa named Spot, and an Arabian named Poe. Our adventures included me getting pulled over and Wendy coming off of Clover in the frigid waters of the Manasquan River.

In the mean time, my lesson student was getting braver and braver and has started not only cantering, but also riding outside of the ring.

March also featured both a wedding and a funeral. Jo, my friend from my racetrack days, married her prince charming in a ceremony that had it all.

Tor came down for a day and we spent some time at the barn torturing all the different horses.

We also accompanied Erin to the Assunpink for a lovely sunset walk:

The pony really started to grow on me:

Kittens started to grow on Mike:

Mike knocked down trees and split a ton of wood:

I got to photograph a beautiful gray mare in the mist:

We took the dogs for a play date at Round Valley:

I was able to trust the pony outside the ring:

After Erin stopped working at SRF, we took a three day whirlwind road trip to North Carolina for a job interview for her. Herbie came with us and the four of us had a packed week. There was  hiking, waterfalls, cows, good food, beautiful stars, and even a side trip to Virginia to visit Kelly.

When we got home, life picked up at its normal breakneck pace. We had a bonfire, which the fire dept. got called out to. Whoops. We helped Dev move into his new apartment. I took on a trailer loading client and found another potential boarder.  I even made time to let my bunny out in the yard to enjoy the spring grass.

This week, we took the pony over to Baldpate mountain for his first real trail experience. He ponied alongside the more experienced horses and did everything from crossing creeks to jumping logs.

So yeah... horses, horses, and more horses with enough energy left to do other things. Life is good. Details can be found on my blog. Now I have to go meet with the pasture expert.
Even with the extra day, February went by in a flash.

The month started off with Herbie giving us a scare when she took off chasing deer in a local park. Thankfully we were able to find her and she came back to us once she snapped out of it, but it scared me half to death.

Early in the month, I met up with an internet friend and her dog for a day of walking in the Assunpink.

Mike and I drove up to Long Island to see my friend Melissa.
We also drove around Hopewell to get hay in his little truck (because his big truck is out of commission).

A random person from my parents' past sent me an email with pictures of the hostel I grew up in.

I surprised myself by taking Ozzy for a ten mile trail ride. He has been coming back from his injury nicely and I am hopeful for a year full of hacking him around.

I went to look at a potential re-sale horse, a Morgan cross named Mitzy. She was a nice enough mare, but not what I was looking for.

Mike took down a bunch of trees at the farm where I keep Ozzy. I helped by taking pictures.

We went hiking at Baldpate.
We went to the Horse Park to watch Erin school Jabby. The trainer who got suckered into taking my old job was there, rode terribly, and nearly fell off. Then I caught her loose horse in the parking lot for her.

Erin and I went to Clayton Park with Herbie.

I gave lots of lessons and schooled Ozzy.

I started trying to get my horse training business off the ground in earnest. The first step was to buy a real website. I spent a lot of time working on it. It's still under construction, but it's getting there and I've already had a few calls from potential clients.
Mike built me a mounting block.
Ozzy gave a lesson to a little girl who has been badly bullied at school.
We had good times with Lynn, who I hadn't seen since August.
I took pictures of birds.

And now it's March and things promise to only get crazier from here. As always, full updates and MORE photos can be found on my blog.
The year is off to a good start! It has been a busy month and I can't believe it's February already.

I started off the year by sticking the boy on Ozzy:

I'm excited about the idea of him joining me for trail rides in the future.

We did a lot of hiking in January, starting with a trip to Schooley's Mountain Park.

We got up in the dead of night to watch a meteor shower from a nearby mountain top. It was freezing cold, but super romantic.
I learned to drive a quad, which was something really fun and completely new to me.
We met up with :devws_topdeck: for a hike in Cheesequake. Sadly, it ended up being a bust. Damn.

I spent some time at the barn with Ozzy, who is getting fat and fuzzy.

I started doing a little bit of vet tech work at two local spay/neuter clinics. I still don't have a solid job plan, but I think vet work might be interesting and rewarding. I am learning a LOT and helping animals in the process, which is really cool.

I went to the Horse Park to cheer Erin on in her first schooling with her younger horse.

Mike and I finally checked out the canal path by my house. It's only ten minutes away, but I had never been, even though I've been living in the area since 2004.

We FINALLY got some snow, but it didn't stick around long.

We took advantage of the winter weather and went horse sledding at my friend Kim's barn.

I had an excellent eight mile trail ride on Ozzy. We rode in not one, but two state parks in one afternoon and enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather.

I got back into bike riding a little bit, and went back to the canal path to get in a few miles. It's harder than I remember, but should make for a great way to exercise this year.

We wrapped up the month with an excellent beach date on which I got within 20 feet of a wild fox and watched seals play in the ocean at sunset.

As always, full updates can be found on my blog. There are always tons of photos and comments are open to the public.
Mike and I are signed up for the Polar Bear Plunge later this month, to raise money for the Special Olympics. In order to actually Plunge, we need to raise a minimum of $100 each You know you want to see us freezing our butts off in the ocean! Time Flies

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 2, 2011, 9:49 AM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

As you've probably guessed, I've been even MORE busy over the last three months. Despite the fact that I'm unemployed, my time on the internet has been scarce and I've been running around the real world, stirring up trouble and having a good time.

I started September with a gig at a marketing firm. I lasted less than a week. It was a pyramid scheme and, while I haven't decided if it was a scam or not, definitely not for me. I quit before I invested too much time and learned not to jump on the first job that comes along. In fact, I turned down a job just last week. It was a chance to work with fox hunting horses up in Hunterdon County. It would have been fun and picturesque, but it wouldn't have paid the bills.

That month, Mike asked what I thought Ozzy would do if he just jumped on him. I said to find out. So Mike rode Ozzy around bareback for a while. The two of them are buddies.

Mike and I also came up with a super awesome interpretive dance.

We spent some time at Round Valley with the dog.

I took Herbie hiking at Schooley's Mountain.

Mike hunted down a bridge I photographed a few years ago and haven't been able to find since.

Before I knew it, October had rolled around. That month, we worked a haunted hay ride at a friend's family farm. I was a creepy clown in the Carnival of Chaos. We got some really epic scares, met some cool people, and made a nice chunk of cash.

That month,  Ozzy tried to kill me when he got thwapped by a hose, knocked me off my feet, and trampled me. He felt guilty, I think, and it's all good now. Whoops! I was also a social butterfly that month. There were bonfires, social get togethers, and dinners with old friends. I was all over the place and loving it.

Mike and I also took his motorcycle out a few times, which I always get a kick out of.

We did even more hiking.

I continued to ride Ozzy and started him back to real trail rides off the property for the first time since his injury in April. He looks and feels good and I get the miles in while the weather holds.

We ended the month with a freak snow storm that did a LOT of damage around the state.

And then it was November already!
I taught Herbie to cross country jump on the course at the horse park.

We drank a lot of tequila and did even MORE hiking.

I rode Ozzy for some more miles.

We went to Maryland to help my dad winterize his boat.

On the 10th, I turned 25. We celebrated with Hibachi.

My bunny came home.

And then there was Thanksgiving! And puppies. And miniature donkeys!

And I took on a new training client...

And now it's December and the year's almost over and my head is spinning. For more organized thoughts, please visit my blog. Anonymous commenting is enabled, and I really enjoy catching up with everyone.

August

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 5, 2011, 9:33 PM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

August flew by in a whirlwind at a speed that left my head spinning. I don't have too many events to update on, but I will say that there are BIG changes going on in my life right now. For starters, it would appear that I am no longer working at SRF. This is for the best. I am interviewing for four jobs this week and am building a horse training client base. I'd love to run with this training/lessons idea, but we'll see how it goes.

The other big change in my life involves a boy named Mike, but those details are still on the DL.

The month started with a ton of fundraising for SRF, including Hambo Golf, Hambletonian Parade, and demos for the World Trotting Conference.

Hurricane Irene battered NJ the other weekend, leaving a lot of flooding and water damage and power outages. We lucked out here. The power only flickered once and our basement stayed dry. The trees stayed up. We didn't lose anything. Unfortunately, SRF flooded pretty badly because a water main burst under the barn. Thankfully, that's not my problem any more.

Outside of work, I've been running around enjoying life. The last two weeks have been especially awesome with tons of hiking, swimming, and throwing hay. I even stacked wood for the first time in my life yesterday! I also went to a wedding and took a mile and a half swim in the ocean just for kicks.

I guess August was all about dropping the old and moving onto bigger, better things. Hope all is well!

July

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 4, 2011, 2:22 PM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

July was another crazy month. I started off by training a friend's TB, who has developed some bad habits over the years.  She also happens to own a really cute 30 year old mule named Willie:

Erin and I went up to Goshen, NY for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony and a day of racing:

Dev, C, Mike, Bryce and I went hiking up at the Stone Living Room:

I took Ozzy to the hospital because he still wasn't quite right. He's got Lyme and is being treated. He also got his joint injected to treat the lameness from April. He's on the road to recovery.

I went to Vermont to compete in the Moonlight ride with Rayzer. It was her first 50. She completed.

Herbie learned to love swimming with the help of her awesome new life jacket:

All in all, a good month.

June Recap

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 2, 2011, 7:58 AM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

I can't believe it's July already! I've been as busy as ever, but it seems like I don't have a ton to report.

I started the month by riding Clover in Allaire while her adopter was on vacation. She was a good girl and we had a great time.

I spent the rest of the month getting Rayzer fit. We rode through the nurseries, in Allaire, and at the Assunpink. The seven year old mare learned to lead, conquer obstacles, and get generally trail savvy.

Meanwhile, the horses at work were keeping me busy:

Halfway through the month, I went to Virginia to crew for Wendy at Old Dominion, the toughest endurance ride in the East. Jimmy completed the 50 and I got to watch the 100 milers complete in the dead of night.

When I got home, Carolyn rescued an adorable pit puppy from a bad situation. She was skinny with a collar grown into her neck, but she positively wiggled with joy nonetheless. I brought Shadow home with me to take pictures of her. She is recovering well and is looking for a loving forever home:

At the end of the month, I moved Ozzy to Cattail Farm where he befriended a mini gelding. He is slowly recovering from his April injury and he's back in light work.

To wrap June up, I took Rayzer to Maine for her first ever endurance ride. We entered the Pine Tree 30. Not only did the mare complete, she blew me out of the water and finished 3rd! Good mare.

I also tried to upgrade my camera, but the refurbished one I got was defective so I'm sending it back. Better luck next time.

As always, detailed entries are on my blog.

May

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 1, 2011, 8:14 AM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

May was a pretty laid back month for me. I was actually borderline bored, what with Ozzy out of work and all.

I started the month off by kidnapping Rayzer from her adopter (my co-worker and friend) and taking her down to Allaire for a conditioning ride. It turns out the mare has some talent and a surprising level of fitness for a little fatty. She may become my temporary endurance mount while Ozzy heals. She is much greener than he is, but she has a good mind and is willing to try her heart out for me. With any luck, I'll be taking her to Maine at the end of the month.

In the meantime, Ozzy has been on the loading dose of PolyGlyCan and is doing really well on it. He is more than halfway through the treatment and is sound in the pasture. He's even been galloping up to see me when I whistle. I'm planning on waiting until the end of the month to put him back into work, but we have ridden a couple times around the farm at a walk.

With all the free time I suddenly have, I decided to take up cooking. As it turns out, I'm actually pretty good at it. I mostly make up my own recipes as I go. So far I've met with great success.

I've been spending a good bit of time outdoors. We took Herbie walking in the Assunpink and I've been hanging out with my friend Carolyn at her Cattail Farm. I even took a drive down to see Kit and Gary at their gorgeous home. I rode their horse Champ and will most likely be putting their four adopted SRF horses back into work over the course of the upcoming months.

One night, while I was at Cattail Farm, Carolyn's son took a nasty fall off his bike. He wound up getting carted away in an ambulance. I spent the night hanging out with his mom while they stitched his leg. He is a-ok now.

Summer has also started, three weeks before it was due. This weekend, ~Aurora-Marille flew out to visit and we crammed everything into one weekend. There was swimming, drinking, and BBQ'ing. It promises to be a heck of a summer, especially since my best friend graduated from college and is home for keeps. Bryce and I even managed to go sailing with my dad down at the Chesapeake.

As always, details are in my blog. Hope everyone else is doing well!

April Recap

Journal Entry: Mon May 2, 2011, 4:19 PM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

Last month was a little bit of a whirlwind. I started the month off by falling off of Ozzy at a gallop. Neither one of us was hurt, but it was an omen of things to come.

After much conditioning, including a 25 mile ride to a local park, Ozzy and I went down to Maryland for Foxcatcher. The full story can be found here, but the short version is that the weekend was a disaster. Ozzy hit some rocks and slipped, then came up lame at the first hold. We were pulled at 25 miles. Our riding buddies went out for the second loop where they got caught in a rain and hail storm. They pulled at 40 miles and we packed it in to go home. On the way over the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the transmission on the truck blew out and left us stranded with two horses at a rest area. Thankfully, Ival's barn owner came to the rescue and Ozzy made it home safely.

X-rays revealed arthritic changes in Ozzy's right front ankle, aggravated by the slippery rock incident. He was put on stall rest for a while and is going to be starting Adequan injections this month. He may or may not have the joint injected. He is still lame and I am just plain depressed about it.

In the mean time, I got to ride Ozzy's half sister, Clover. She was a joy and we had an awesome ride. I'm looking forward to riding a lot of other people's horses in the upcoming months, but details on that at a later date.

In other sad news, we had to put down our resident 28 year old mare, Gayle, when she was diagnosed with liver failure.

Thankfully, not everything about the month sucked. Herbie has been living it up and going on a ton of adventures. She has proven to be quite the adventure dog. At the end of the month, she got to have a kitten for a few days. My boss scooped her out of her yard and Erin ended up taking her home and naming her Harley.

Here's hoping this month goes more smoothly!

March Recap

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 1, 2011, 6:55 PM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

March started off with the sad news that Dr. Dey, the vet who helped pull Ozzy out of the swamp in November had passed away. We also lost a 28 year old mare at SRF and Ozzy's grandsire, Valley Victory died at his retirement home.

I spent the month trying to find hoofwear solutions for my horse and after trying fiberglass, opted to go with glue on shoes. He has always been sound barefoot, but we're stepping it up this endurance season and I need something to protect him from accelerated wear from doing hundreds of miles. I refuse to nail on shoes, but glue ons are a nice compromise.

This month was also ~EatsNoCheese and ~likwidoxigen's birthdays. We celebrated in style.

I spent a lot of time conditioning and even put together a trail riding guide.

I also went out to visit the breeding farm I used to work with. My old boss got engaged and we caught up while the dogs played.

Ozzy and I kicked off the endurance season with a 55 mile weekend in the Pinelands. He kicked butt and nailed both completions.

He was also included in an endurance newsletter online.

I rounded out the month by trailer loading a horse that nobody's been able to load in 10 years. Victory!

February Summary

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 7, 2011, 7:52 PM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

This past month was short, but that didn't make it any less crazy!

At the beginning of the month, ~likwidoxigen and I decided to keep Herbie, the pitbull puppy.

Despite my blanketing efforts, Ozzy grew a ton o winter hair, forcing me to clip him. He wiggled while I was doing his trace clip so his butt is shaved.

I made a video of Herbie and Erin's horse, Jabby. It went viral over night.

Ozzy and I went 'horseboarding' with my friend Carolyn's son and his friend. Everyone involved had a blast.

Herbie learned to ride Ozzy.

I got back into conditioning. Ozzy and I have been doing 15 mile trail rides on the weekends. The GPS and helmet cam have been handy.

*dischord and I spent an awesome weekend in the Catskills. There was good food, good company, and snow mobiling (my new favorite sport). Did I mention we stayed in a mansion? And that there were fireworks?

The only bad news for the month is that Dr. Dey, the vet who pulled Ozzy out of the swamp in November passed away at the end of the month, at 74 years young. He will be sorely missed.

The details and helmet cam footage can be seen at my blog: [link]

First Month Summary for 2011

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 1, 2011, 10:13 PM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

We rang in the New Year in style with a get together of our best friends.

*dischord and ~EatsNoCheese joined up with us for a fun filled day of museum visits, despite the snow. We saw the camera museum and the world's largest miniature train set.

I started the year off with farmsitting for a friend. This meant lots of time with her two adorable minis.

The friend is a vet. One day, the local shelter brought her a tiny pit bull puppy. She had gotten into something and was having seizures. They brought her in to have her put down, but my friend stepped in and saved the pup, now named Herbie [the love bug]. ~likwidoxigen and I took her to puppysit for the week. Well... it's been nearly a month and she's still here.

Unfortunately, the pup had a shot of wormer and it turned out Bryce was highly allergic, which ended in a trip to the ER. He's ok, but that was not a fun day.

Another not-so-fun day was after a big snow storm. They hadn't plowed the driveway at work and my car didn't make it. We had to call AAA to have it towed to the end of the driveway.

Meanwhile, Ozzy was busy giving me a lameness scare. He turned out to be fine and we're back to riding. We've been experimenting with horseback archery and hacking around in the snow. On our latest adventure, Erin's horse fell and I caught the whole spill on helmet cam.

So far I've ridden 12 horses this year... some good, some bad, and some really fun.

It's been a busy year already!

November Summary

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 2, 2010, 7:10 PM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

Another month, another summary.

In November, I started riding with Ival and Wendy, two endurance riders, after Ival adopted a mare named Clover from SRF. We went out to Collier's Mills and got some conditioning in. Later in the month, we went to the Mustang Memorial and Ozzy and I completed the 50 I mentioned in my last entry.

I also trained some SRF adopted horses outside of work. Murphy and Finnbar are doing very well.

The thoroughbred I rehabbed made a good recovery and went home with his owner, ~rckmeamadeus.

I went to the Horse Park for a fundraiser.

Unfortunately, we lost one of our available horses in Kentucky. RIP Doozy.

But the BIG EXCITEMENT for the month happened two days after Thanksgiving when I sank Ozzy in mud so badly that the fire department had to come and get him out. We made international news and haven't heard the end of it since. The whole story can be seen on my blog.

October Review

Journal Entry: Mon Nov 8, 2010, 9:00 AM
All work available in print. Please note me for details.

Another month has flown by.

Ozzy started the month by getting adjusted by a chiropractor. I was relieved to find out he had nothing really wrong with him. He's extremely flexible and I do lots of stretches with him. His saddle fit is apparently not a problem. The only thing he needed fixed was the hip he threw out last winter when he did the splits out in his pasture.

I did a lot of trail riding in October, much of which I taped with my new helmet cam. The videos can be found on my Youtube.

In unfortunate news, my friend Christina lost her 12 year old gelding, Kosmos, to intestinal tumors. It was a sad day for everyone. He was a great horse, extremely sweet and trustworthy, and he will be missed.

I spent some time at Bluestone and took pictures of the foals and yearlings.

I also spent some more time hiking with *dischord and ~likwidoxigen (who I recently moved in with after my roommate lost her mind).

The only bad news about my move is that I had to re-home my three kitties.

I fell off horses twice in October (first time I've fallen since January). The first fall came when Mackinac spooked at a goat going through a fence. He spun out from under me and I toppled off. The good news is I landed on my feet. The following day, Ozzy and I hit a gopher hole at full gallop. He fell and I went over his head. I caught the whole thing on video.

I wrenched my ankle, but Ozzy and I are both fine:

I went to the Breeder's Crown in the Poconos for work and got to see some great live racing:

I also went apple picking:

October was a big month for work-related events. We held our annual Charity Ride. Ozzy and I were in charge of the trails. After hunters took the markers down, I had to re-mark the loop on horseback. I strapped stakes to my chest and took spray paint in a backpack. Ozzy was a superstar about the whole thing.

We also held our annual Open House. Ozzy gave pony rides all day:

I also got to (finally) meet the awesome and very talented *WSTopDeck who rode Ozzy:

Did I mention I did a lot of trail riding?

Ozzy got a new hood to protect his mane through the winter. He wasn't thrilled.

That thoroughbred I'm rehabbing is doing well:

I'm hoping to have him shipped out this week.

The farm I grew up working at (and where I got Oz) is getting torn down for housing.

Ozzy and I went bow hunting.

(just kidding)

I started a new public blog, then rounded the month out in style by taking Ozzy trick-or-treating in town dressed as the Grim Reaper.

Life remains as busy and crazy as ever and I have very little time to keep up with the internet :P
